Cadmium Orange

Cadmium Orange straight out of the tube, Golden Acrylics

Orange. It’s a color that has grown on me over the years. As a kid, I remember hating orange. When selecting whatever colored pawn or moving object in a game, I had to have a cool color, maybe red, but never orange or yellow.

Add orange’s complement, blue, and suddenly it’s all aflame. Vibrating, pulsating like embers. Mix them together, and you get something gray. Bring red or yellow, its component colors, into the mix, and you can push it to either end of its color limitations.

Mayday, acrylic on canvas

It’s not as predominant in the world as green is, but when you do find it, you’d be hard-pressed to miss it. It’s not a receding color by any means. This is a centerstage color. One dot can transform the scene.

What does orange bring up for you? Can you find orange in your day-to-day? How often? Where? Share in the comments below.
